Show coming up!

I have a show coming up in two weeks on May 31st  at the Old Whiteaker Firehouse in, and I decided to post a few sneak-peek preview images of the work. There will be some animation involved, too. I'll upload more photos as we progress in time closer to the show.
Meanwhile, check out our facebook event page for more info. Also, read about the amazing bands that will be playing at the opening! (some collaboration between art and music will be happening, more details on that closer to the date).
All of the pieces below are in watercolor, on board and on paper.

Action Adventure

A new piece I made to benefit Action Adventure Theater in Portland. I was given a piece of writing by Jamie s. Rich and had to respond to it in visual art. At the event, actors will act out the stories and other such fun things. The auction/event will take place on April 29th. (Click here for event details).

Spring Sketchbook

This week they were chainsawing down a tree by my window, so I grabbed my sketchbook and went to do some watercoloring. There's so much stuff blooming right now, I feel like it needs to be captured before it all fades.

I've created a new blog just for watercolor (with demos and such): http://watercolor-land.blogspot.com

Sketches/Paintings for a project

A few sketches for an ongoing project. I probably won't use these, but they gave me some good ideas!

Accordion Book of Russian Foods

A while ago, my friend had sent me this great link from Design Sponge on how to make a simple accordion book, so when the Slavic Librarian wanted help to design an exhibit for the library about the cultures of Russia, I knew I wanted to make a little accordion book of soviet foods for the display! These are all the soviet foods inspired by the different cultured residing in it, form Armenian to Georgian etc. As soon as the display is done, I'm hoping to post some pictures!

Here are all the images that are in the book:
Note: craft, precision and folding paper are my nemeses, so I feel especially proud :)

Russian National Foods

I am helping the Slavic Librarian on campus to design an exhibit about the different cultures and people residing in Russia. As part of it, I decided to make a little illustrated book (can't help but paint stuff!) of the different favorite foods in Russia that were inspired by different cultures. When it's done, I'm hoping to upload pictured of the exhibition and of the finished book!

Faux New Yorker For Fun

My friend Diane who is also an illustrator has challenged me to create a cover for the New Yorker. I decided to use this idea I had for a while, since I went to the Museum of Natural History in Cambridge, MA, with that same friend in 2010. That museum is so fascinating and strange! I mixed and matched my impressions and sketches and this is the result.

If it was the real cover, perhaps a relevant article in the news that week could fit with the subject, or I can pretend it's some kind of political metaphor? In any case I think that anything that I find funny is worth painting. Don't you?

Emily the Painter

My good friend Emily, hard at work on her beautiful paintings. You will be able to see her work in May at Disjecta gallery in Portland, Oregon, and a few other places as well.

Art for Gefilte Fish Chronicles: The musical!

Last night was the opening debut of Gefilte Fish Chronicles: the Musical! I have been working on this project for a while, making some paintings for the musical. The art was used as print material for the show as well as backdrops, and I think a few other things, but I'm not sure. I am hoping to get some photos soon!
I wish I could go se it,  but we are on opposite coasts. If you are on the East coast, go check it out! Here is a selection of a few paintings out of 15 pieces that I made:

Local Choice Market at the Pearl

I'm pretty sure this market is new, because last week is the first time I noticed it being there. Looks pretty dandy in there, haven't tried the food since I have just eaten my own body-weight in Pirogis from the Polish food cart, but maybe next time I'll samples some deli favorites! (and this girl looks super cool- I had to paint her)

Phone Drama!

A woman I saw at the Teacher's Fountain in Portland a few years back, when the flying elephant was still that organic burger place. She was actually talking to another person, but I thought she looked cool narrating and gesturing on her own.
